Sampling is important to use for conducting research like surveys. In research investigations involving several hundreds and even thousands of elements, it's not always possible to interview or analyze every single person or object of interest. Study of a sample rather than the entire population is also sometimes likely to produce more reliable results. This is mostly because fatigue is reduced and fewer errors will therefore result in collecting data, especially when a large number of elements are involved.
Researchers have to choose only some people or objects to include in the study. However, this selection must be conducted carefully to ensure that the research results based on this small group---a sample---are accurate when applied to all the people or objects that exist (called the population in statistical terminology).
