The former capital of Thailand is actually a lovely little town with a romantic river running through. Several restaurants are located right at the river offering lovely views. Ofcourse this is a touristic town, many tour companies offering day tours from Bangkok. Almost nobody stays overnight (we found only 2 decent hotels).
The ruins are all over the town. Go to the Tourist Association office and get the free map which makes it easier to navigate. Entry fees are about 40 baht for foreigners for each site. You can either walk, rent a bicycle or simply hire a tuk tuk (taxi) to drive you around.
If you are a movie fan you might remember the action flick: "Mortal Combat 2" which was shot within these ruins and generated quite some noise amongst the local people who wanted to preserve the holy ground only for visitors and not for the Hollywood industry.
Try to come early morning or evening, most of the crowds will be gone and twilight gives this extra special feel.
